I was a little anxious before attending The Oxford Fashion Studio show because I did not know what to expect once I arrived. As my uber dropped me off at the door of the Pier 59 studios, I immediately began to feel more comfortable. Not only was I excited to have finally arrived, but because I saw people like me. People who were unapologetically themselves and fearlessly expressed themselves through their threads. Once the room filled up and the lights began to dim, I immediately felt like Carrie Bradshaw in Sex and the City, so I flipped my hair and glued my eyes onto what magic was about to take place.
New York Fashion Week- Chaahat Thakker Fall/ Winter Collection
Young designer Chaahat Thakker stole our hearts this year at NYFW with a child-like innocence represented throughout her line, DEPLICO. The inspiration behind her whimsical designs and uses of medium colors come from her students that she teaches sewing classes. She incorporated their pure outlook on life and disregard for the adult-world into her collection.
Very structured tops and skirts graced the runway as the models strut along in ruffled socks and sneakers. With her entire line dominated in yellow, green, and blue colors, she created playful garments that will make the consumer want to join in on the fun. I know I do!
Ron Ramos delighted us with an array of contrasts in textiles and pieces debuted throughout his collection. With his inspiration from strong female leads, he created a collection of masculine suiting with a hat that resembles those from the 1930’s mobsters. Exceptional in combining contrasts of hard and soft textiles such as faux fur/ leather, crepe, and satin to his finishes, “I like the juxtapose between a charming and fierce woman”. Ron offers pieces that can effortlessly turn morning looks into eveningwear. This line will make it hard for consumers not to walk away feeling like a girl-boss, a woman that is ready to takeover while delicately doing so.
Pheren Soepadhi took us on a stroll through a fantasy realm with her Lacrimosa Collection. Elegant in lace masks; it was as if each model took us through a new dimension of a magical forest with fairies, unicorns, and the unknown. Lace, crystals and embroidery graced the runway with each couture gown both short and long. Pheren’s fascination on historical fashion showed in each beaded bodice as the structure resembled those from the Victorian era. Pheren is multi talented holding a degree in both Multimedia Arts and Fashion Design. Her different experiences in art has helped her to broaden her creativity and think outside the box on what is considered to be “normal”.
