“ Pose” star Billy Porter’s show-stopping red carpet ensemble at the Tony’s this year undoubtedly made a statement. The designer behind it is none other than Celestino Couture. The red velvet “gender-fluid evening suit” was created as a nod to woman’s reproductive rights. Celestino was the perfect choice as both designers; Sergio Celestino Guadarrama and Kade Johnson pride themselves on designing with a purpose. This socially conscious mentality is driven from a strong Mexican American heritage and work ethic. Standing up for political issues, minority’s, and the LGBT community is a priority of the environmentally sustainable brand. Celestino’s Spring-Summer 2020 presentation hit the mark by inspiring others to take a stand for social causes.

The wow factor I experienced while attending my first Celestino presentation last NYFW resurfaced as I viewed the new collection. Mannequins were crowned with natural texture wigs inspired by Frida Khalo, and photographs of woman in Sergio Celestines family. Kade Johnson made it clear that despite the tumultuous political climate the USA is currently in Celestino encourages the empowerment of immigrants, you are welcome “you can flourish in this country”.  Two of the most prominent floor sweeping gowns, were both constructed with high neck lines, cold shoulder details, combined with Chantelle lace. Extremely detailed and exquisitely constructed I envisioned Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex or Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge wearing many of these ensembles. Another stand out was the blue, orange, and pink multicolored woven knee length dress. The belted waist and sheer square neckline are universally flattering.

Passionate about making a statement this collection was no different. The most poignant detail was the fringe trimming on the gowns used to symbolize the negative effects of  chemical runoff. The fashion industry contributes to different forms of environmental hazards including water, air and soil pollution. Environmental engineer Robin Sandell was present to enlighten listeners on not only the issues, but possible solutions, including clothing companies utilizing the EPA- environment protection association, and being aware of regulatory requirements. Attending this Celestino presentation was visually and educationally enlightening. In a world where what you have on is taken so seriously it is refreshing to see designers with a couture line making a positive impact in not only the fashion industry, but the world.
