“The exhibition traces a century and a half of fashion—from 1870 to the present—along a disruptive timeline, on the occasion of The Met’s 150th anniversary. it explores how clothes generate temporal associations that conflate past, present, and future”.
About Time: Fashion and Duration was the exhibit that I was lucky to catch at The Metropolitan Museum earlier this month. It was sold out faster than you can say FASHION! The Louis Vuitton sponsored exhibit was an all black affair, as the designs featured were mainly black to emphasize changes in silhouettes.
Some of the most well renowned designer were included in the presentation such as, Alexander McQueen, Yves Saint Laurent, Christian Dior, Gabrielle Chanel and Stephen Burrows to name a few. What I especially appreciated was that some of the designs created in the early 1900s are still in style today. For example, an evening dress consisting of a fringe silhouette designed by Madeleine Vionnet in 1925 ( right below) was reimagined by Raf Simons for Jil Sander in 2009 (left below). Its like the style just stood still in time but maintained a current modern-day look.
There was so much beauty, class and sophistication that was embodied in these designs that would make you want to see it again and again. The exhibit ended on February 7th but you can enjoy the videos and pictures below and take your own magical tour of the About Time: Fashion and Duration exhibit.
