Attending Urban World Film Festival for the first time uplifted my spirit in a way I did not know I needed. Urban World curates a slate of films connecting cultures through authentic storytelling. There is something special about being surrounded by a diverse community of innovators and creators. This competitive festival celebrates the multicultural community of film with mediums such as narrative shorts, features, documentaries and music videos. I was blessed with the opportunity to facilitate red carpet interviews for this event.

Opening nights feature film was Harriett, for the first time Director Kasi Lemmons brings heroic abolitionist Harriett Tubman to the big screen. Played by Tony Award winning actress Cynthia Erivo. Long overdue, this film grasps the audiences heartstrings highlighting Harriet Tubman’s unwavering courage and tenacity. On Night two was the screening of All Rise, directed by Anthony Mandler this film brings together a star studded cast including ASAP Rocky, Nas, and Jennifer Hudson. Actor Kelvin Harrison Jr. captivates the audience as Steve Harmon. Charged with a felony murder the seventeen year old honor student fights to prove his innocence. The following night was the screening of  Just Mercy, staring Michael B. Jordon and Jamie Foxx. This film tells the true story of lawyer and social activist Bryan A. Stevenson. Meeting a real life hero such as Mr.Stevenson was profoundly inspiring. Closing nights spotlight film was Black and Blue. In director Deon Taylor’s emotionally charged action thriller Academy Award nominee Naomie Harris plays the leading role as Alicia West, a rookie policewoman in New Orleans. Alicia finds herself on the run after inadvertently capturing a murder committed by corrupt cops on her body cam. Black and Blue creates necessary dialogue and begins to chisel away at hardened hearts within communities, the police force, the  judicial system and beyond.

Urban World Film Fest is an incredibly enriching cultural experience. A platform that heightens the exceptional talent of the diverse film and media community. I am thankful to founder Stacy Spikes for creating a place where bold and artistic works are celebrated. A space that dispels negative perceptions of not only the stories being told, but of the ones telling the story.
