My favorite type of shows during New York Fashion Week are presentations over runway shows. I love the idea of getting up close and personal with the designs to take in all of the details and structure of the clothing. Studio One Eighty Nine did just that. They wowed us with all the beautiful colors, textures and prints of their sustainable line. The design house decided for their first Fall collection ever to go the presentation route. I had a real appreciation for the clothing line after attending their panel discussion a few days before with the founders Abria Erwiah and Rosario Dawson on how they founded the brand and the wealth of knowledge about why we should use sustainable fabrics.
When we think of repurposed items you seldom think of anything that would look appealing or beautiful. Keeping with its roots of Africa where the clothing is made, Ghana to be exact. The bold hues and magnificent patterns were in line with the African esthetics made into modern silhouettes. The pieces were very versatile and could be worn from day to night just by adding a few accessories.
This collection is the true meaning of statement pieces. You are sure to command the room with one of these striking looks. There was something for everyone from adults to children to select from. My favorite was the multi-colored patterned skirt. I was mixing and matching it in my head with items that I already have in my wardrobe! I love when passion and purpose come together. These women felt compelled to give back and found a way through fashion to manifest their philanthropy while dressing the masses!
