For the second year, Indonesian Diversity has proven that traditionally worn Muslim garments can be just as exciting and fashionable as anything else. The show usually showcases four Indonesian designers, all dramatically different, but just as talented. As a second time attendee to the show, I wasn’t so sure what to expect. However, I knew that I’d want something off the runway! Last year was filled with lots of structure, beautifully tailored fits, and lots of accessories. There was also lots of inspiration from cities such as Marrakech and Surabaya. This year was a change of pace to say the least. As the show began and the lights dimmed, Nice for what by Drake started to play setting the tone for the first designer Miss Dian Pelangi!
Dian Pelangi is a digital influencer and Indonesian designer who is taking fashion week by storm mixing traditional hijab looks with street style. As Drake blasted through the speakers, the runway filled with graphic prints, belts that tied and hung down to the floor, hijabs, and red tinted triangle shaped sunglasses. The outfits were layers of black with graffiti, and hints of reds, pinks, and blues. This was not your average subdued-toned Islamic dress. Pelangi collection was youthful and vibrant, changing the normal view of what the Muslim woman should look like. It was a beautiful collection and showcased the many possibilities of Muslim wear.
Next up was Itang Yunasz. Itang, one of Indonesia’s prominent modest designers, is best known for his use of Batik and tie dies. His show showcased just that. Each model that came down the runway seemed to glide in their long, flowing dresses. Some of the dressed were jeweled, but all were printed with dramatic sleeve details. Let me not forget to mention the stunning head pieces they all wore! Beautifully tied satin head pieces crowned every model that graced the stage!
My favorite collection of the show was 2Madison Avenue founded by designer Maggie Hutauruk. Maggie makes a variety of creative products including Fashion, furniture, home décor, and garments, but today was all about the garments. Maggie’s show was dramatic and modern with ruffles somehow appearing in every look. There were bold prints with bright colors such as orange, red, pink, and royal blue. There was no limit to her collection as it featured dresses, tops, jackets, pants, and spartan-like head pieces! Her collection highlighted her wide range of talent!
The last collection was by Alleria Batik, one of the largest retailers in Indonesia. Alleria, taken from the English word “alluring”, was created in October of 2005 in Jakarta but has now reached many cities in the world including Bali, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Melbourne, and New York. The collection featured beautifully tailored ready to wear pieces. The first look, a patterned suit, led way to a sophisticated show that had everything from jackets, to dresses and skirts. All made with silks and beautiful prints, its no wonder why his creations have been worn by celebrities such as Bill Gates, Richard Gere, and Miss Universe 2008 and 2013.
