Awestruck is the first word that comes to mind as I reflect back on the magical production that was the Sheguang Hu autumn/winter 2020 runway show. Carmen Dell’ Orefice, the world’s oldest supermodel, opened the show. I found myself saying wow as each new garment graced the runway at pier 59 Studios.
A feat within itself models donned six inch platform heels akin to the 1970’s. Wearing a custom Hu snakeskin dress model Christina Weng shared her experience “ this was a really cool show, with lots of energy from the audience!” She continued “the shoes are like a foot tall and a challenge at first, but once we got it we worked it.” The noticeably slower walk of each model was necessary for more than the height of the heels. Oversized rose details and Avant-garde necklines increased the theatrical feel for the audience. One of the many diverse international models Hu selected was Delesa Archer of Guyana. When I inquired she explained “It was an amazing and different experience walking for Sheguang Hu in those cool bratz doll, lady Gaga spice girls shoes, it was my first time walking a runway with cars parked on it. I loved my shine bright like a diamond dress and we know yellow makes the melanin pop.” Surprisingly enough Hu had another element intriguing show attendees.
The Bestune T77 is a compact CUV produced by the leading Chinese car manufacturer Besturn. Two of these cars were placed directly onto the walkway as models maneuvered around them. Hu himself explained his inspiration for this season “The car being made in China designed by a Chinese automatics designer was my inspiration, myself being a fashion designer.” The Chinese fashion icon stated beaming with pride as he spoke. These inspired elements were easy to point out. The bright yellow hue of the couture gowns being a perfect match to the car. Inspirational aspects could also be found in the primarily pattern leather fabrication of each garment. They Represented innovation that is present in both fashion and automotive design. Uniquely captivating, empowering, far from average. Mediocrity was not a factor. What an honor it was to witness this collection.
