Genius is an American anthology period drama television series which takes a look at fascinating people in history. This season “Genius: Aretha”  is the docuseries on National Geographic Channel that will air about Aretha Franklin.  It tells the story from her childhood to her rise to fame.  I was privy to be invited to an advanced screening of the series on March 11th , at one of the 4 drive-in theaters in the following cities, New York, Detroit, Los Angeles and Atlanta hosting the event to view the premiere! Part one of the eight part series was riveting and definitely left you wanting to know more.  The film is shown in flashback style detailing many pivitol moments in Aretha’s life that impacted her as well as molded her to become  “The Queen of Soul”.

Attention was also shown on her relationships with the men in her life, her father, Reverend Clarence Franklin, played by Courtney B. Vance who was domineering and had strong hold on her. Then her first husband and manager, Ted White, played by Malcolm Barrett who seemed to be very insecure and jealous of Aretha’s career and success. Though put through trials and tribulations, you see how Aretha is a consummate perfectionist and gives meaning to the show must go on! Cynthia Erivo gave an incredible performance as Ms. Franklin, where she embodied her mannerisms, attitude, and amazing vocals.

The evening events included an array of activities before the actual film started such as, Spoken Word by Suzan-Lori Parks, showrunner of Genius: Aretha. Performances by trumpeter Marquis Hillon from the stage of the Apollo Theater, Bill Moss Jr. presents the Detroit Youth All-Star Choir, c-Live & AfroPunk Artists. Performances by Genius: Aretha actresses Antonique Smith, Patrice Covington & Rebecca Naomi Jones. Appearances by Brian Grazer and Courtney B. Vance. After the screening an exclusive performance of Aretha classics by Cynthia Erivo taped at the Greek Theater in Los Angeles.

Genius: Aretha” premiers on Sunday, March 21st at 9pm on Nat Geo (National Geographics).  It will run until Sunday, March 28th, the day of Aretha Franklin’s actual birthday.  Episode one set the tone for a drama filled series with highs and lows and lots a good music.  I am definitely tuning in to see the rest unfold!
